Professor Kai London does not mince words. As one of the world's leading independent CISO advisors and AI Security Strategists, he has spent decades watching organisations underestimate cyber risk — and paying the price. In this exclusive interview, he shares his perspectives on the AI-enabled threat landscape and what boards need to understand about cyber resilience.
On the most important shift in the threat landscape:
"AI adoption by adversaries. Full stop. We are seeing AI being used to automate vulnerability discovery, to craft highly personalised phishing content at industrial scale, to bypass traditional identity verification systems using synthetic media, and to operate malware that adapts its behaviour to evade detection. These are not future threats — they are current threats. The question is whether defenders are moving fast enough to respond."
On what a cyber-resilient board looks like:
"A cyber-resilient board asks informed questions, not technical ones. They ask: What would a major cyber incident cost us in operational disruption, regulatory penalty, and reputational damage? How confident are we in our ability to detect and respond? What are our most critical assets and how are they protected? Are we stress-testing our defences or just checking compliance boxes? Boards that can ask and answer those questions are boards that are genuinely governing cyber risk. Everything else is theatre."
On AI Security specifically:
"AI security is the defining challenge of this decade. Every organisation deploying AI needs to understand that AI systems are not just tools — they are attack surfaces. The data that trains them, the models that run on them, the APIs that connect them to your business systems — all of these are vectors that sophisticated adversaries are already probing. Organisations that build AI governance and security into their AI programmes from day one will be far better positioned than those who retrofit security as an afterthought."
